The oldest Circolo in the world - the Circolo degli Uniti - was founded in Siena (Tuscany) in 1657 and there are no traces in old Europe of older institutions of the same tenor. It was very different from the “academies”, an older form of association, dedicated to philosophy, to literature, to science. The Circolo degli Uniti was a club of people whose main objec-
tive wasn't only to come together for “recreation” or “conversation”, but, without renouncing a cultural program, its aim was mainly to organise entertainment for its members. British Clubs have always been exclusive gentlemen's club.
The italian Circolo has always been also accessible to ladies.
